There are many different types of barcode labels we can print at Applied Labels. But how do you know which type you need? Our handy guide to barcode labels can help...
Code 39 - The industry standard alphanumeric code. Allows the use of digits and characters. It is not as compact as Code128 labels, but it is still heavily used in the automotive industry.
Code 128 - Used in the shipping and packaging industries in logistics for ordering, distribution and transportation. The number 128 does not refer to the number of digits it can hold but more that it can hold any character of the ASCII 128 character set. This includes digits, character and punctuation marks. This broad range makes it very powerful as it enables you to store diversified information in the barcode labels. It is also fairly compact, which gives a decent data storage to size ratio.
EAN-8 - European Article Numbering retail bar code where space is limited (eg chewing gum packets), using 8 digits. Used for Point of Sale items.
EAN-13 - European Article Numbering industry standard retail code, using 13 digits. Used for Point of Sale items.
UPC-A - Universal Product Code for tracking trade items in shops. Mainly used in Point of Sale in the United States of America.
QR Code - Originally developed by Toyota for car parts, a QR code is now more often found being used by the advertising industry to be scanned with a smartphone to access more information.
Datamatrix - High density code for small electronic components. Can hold large amounts of data.
Typical applications for barcode labels include retail barcodes, document tracking, goods tracking, inventory control and asset management.
